This Week In Doctor Who - November 23, 2005
(posted 23rd Nov 2005, 11:48am - TWIDW post #0360)
THIS WEEK IN DOCTOR WHO - Belgium! Netherlands! 42!
November 23, 2005 - Vol 8, No 47
The weekly guide to Doctor Who broadcasts worldwide.
by Benjamin F. Elliott
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thisweekindoctorwho
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/torchwood
Doctor Who is 42 today. There were 42 episodes in the first season.
There were 42 episodes in the Sylvester McCoy era. The most watched
story on original broadcast was City Of Death, co-written by Douglas
Adams, who was about to become famous around the world writing
Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, a story oddly focused around 42.
What does this mean? Absolutely nothing, but there's an information
overload this week and this paragraph is a nice break from trying to
put it all together.
Wednesday 23 November:
NRK 2 Norway - 8:05PM - Ny Helt For Rose?
Friday 25 November:
Jimmy (Italy) - 9PM - The Unquiet Dead
Saturday 26 November:
één Belgium (Netherlands) - 3:55PM - Rose (Series Premiere!)
France 4 - 10:20PM - Jeu Interminable/Fête Des Pères
Christmas Day:
BBC One/BBC Three - Christmas Special Episode The Christmas Invasion
Boxing Day:
CBC Canada - Christmas Special Episode The Christmas Invasion
The Children In Need sketch
http://www.bbc.co.uk/pudsey/appealnight/doctor_who_special.shtml is
currently being offered online to the world for free in realplayer
format at that link. This scene occurs right after The Parting Of
The Ways and leads into The Christmas Invasion (due to premiere in
the UK and Canada in December). For many people, particularly in the
US, this is your first (completely legitimate) way to see a piece of
new Doctor Who. It is roughly 7 minutes long, plus one minute of
material David Tennant and Billie Piper recorded asking people to
donate to Children In Need. BTW, if you plan to watch, please donate
to Children In Need. It is unknown how long the segment will remain
on the website.
Belgium & The Netherlands - één Network http://www.een.be , a public network in Belgium, has bought the rights to air Doctor Who. It premieres this Saturday at 3:55PM CET, with one episode airing per week (no repeats). Één is apparently available in the Netherlands, so 2 countries get Doctor Who through this deal. Episodes will air in English with Flemish subtitles. Nederland 3 in the Netherlands is due to air Doctor Who as well starting in January.
We need to get a list of spillover countries where you can see
Doctor Who from neighboring countries' broadcasts. We know the CBC
reaches border areas of the US. BBC One and BBC Three reach parts of
Ireland, France, and several other European countries. Hopefully a
full list can be compiled before The Christmas Invasion airs.
The Christmas Invasion will premiere on Christmas Day (Sunday 25
December) on BBC One, repeating later on BBC Three. Broadcast time
to be determined. The BBC Press Office
http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice has put up details of the shows
scheduled on the BBC channels on Christmas Day, though they do not
have times yet. There is a nice picture of the TARDIS in the snow
with a Christmas wreath on the doors. BBC Three has "Doctor Who"
listed with no details. I am assuming it will be The Christmas
Invasion, though it could be repeats of Series One or Doctor Who
Confidential.
UKTV Gold http://www.ukgold.tv will have special Doctor Who programming for the Christmas & New Years period. Series One will air one episode a day from Monday 19 December with pre-emptions on Christmas Day and Boxing Day (26 December), airing 11 episodes through 31 December (date of last 2 episodes to be announced). The 1996 TV Movie starring Paul McGann will air Christmas Day starting at 8:20AM.
ABC Australia http://www.abc.net.au/tv goes to 2 episodes a day 5 days a week from Monday 28 November. Which is this coming Monday. Don't be caught off guard.
MPT Maryland http://www.mpt.org will cycle back to the Patrick Troughton stories (again) next week, as their contract to air classic Doctor Who continues but they are not being allowed to buy any stories they do not yet already have. This will be the 4th time in a row through the Troughton and Pertwee stories.
Various reports on BBC7's http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbc7 December plans came out this week. Shada (2003 Big Finish/BBCi remake of the unfinished TV story) will apparently air with material discussing Douglas Adams. Shada will be the CD audio release version, which is very slightly different from the version still online at the BBC's Doctor Who website http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/classic/index.shtml. My Life As A Dalek, the Radio 4 documentary by Mark Gattiss exploring the metal monsters, will get another broadcast. And it's previously been reported that The Chimes Of Midnight (Big Finish 8th Doctor/Charley audio story) will air in December as well.
The BBC Press Office http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice and C21 Media
http://www.c21media.net often announce when a Doctor Who
international sale occurs. Worth keeping an eye on, just in case.
Best wishes to everyone attending the Chicago TARDIS Doctor Who
convention in Chicago this weekend.

David Tennant and Billie Piper star in this 7 minute Doctor Who
scene made for Children In Need. It is set immediately between The
Parting Of The Ways and The Christmas Invasion. It is still online
at this time. Remember to donate - this was made to help Children In
Need. Picture and sound quality are mediocre, at least outside the
UK. It is unlikely to air on TV again, though one hopes it will
eventually see DVD. For now, it is a chance for anyone with internet
connections to see new Doctor Who around the world.
